Argentina

Well gents, this will probably be my last post for a good while. I have ten more days in Montevideo, then I'm headed back to the States to get Savannah's paperwork for Europe. Pet entry to Europe is a pretty insane process and I can't find any consistentTake your chances and drink the glacier water. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaAfter returning to Ushuaia I went on a few hikes with this fella, @hannes_becker, who I met on the ship to Antarctica. Not only were the hikes the first time I've ever been shooting with as talented a photographer as Hannes, but it was my first time shootThere at the end is the icebreaker I'll be taking to Antarctica - the Akademic Ioffe. There's a crew of 65 and somewhere around 90 passengers. We have a meeting in a few hours, then ship off not long after that. Once we're away from land there won't be inMontevideo ➡️ Buenos Aires ➡️ Ushuaia. Tomorrow, pushing off for Antarctica. Huge shout-out to Philadelphia Sign for having my back before I took a single step and making this leg of The World Walk possible. I doubt I would have madeDay 659. Walking a long empty road with far too much humidity. It's only nine here and I'm drenched in sweat. I was hoping for easy walking to Montevideo but doesn't look like that's going to happen. #theworldwalk #travel #argentina #carnavalDay 658. We made it to Uruguay! Our last country in South America. So surreal I've walked all this way from New Jersey. There were countless hard days when the arriving in Uruguay felt nearly impossible, yet here we are. Amazing where persistence will takDay 655. Savannah and I made some friends in Gualeguaychu who took us around town in a '31 Ford. The car was built in the States, shipped to Britain, then later shipped to Argentina. It'll still do 40mph with all the original parts. #theworldwalk #travelDay 653. Savannah and I were caught in another vicious storm two nights ago. In the middle of the night I awoke to realize everything had flooded around us. I jumped outside in my underwear and sloshed though the suddenly swampish grass for about fifteenDay 457. Woke to dense fog this morning - beautiful, but a sign of the coming humidity. The landscape is undulating farmland. I'm walking a more trafficked road than usual. I'm constantly moving to the grass as cars approach and turning my head to check iYou ever feel bad for not taking your dog out for the usual twenty mile walk? #theworldwalk #travel #argentina #savannahtwwDay 645. Making a two day pit stop in Paraná to get Savannah's paperwork for Uruguay. The paperwork is only good for ten days, and it's about a nine day walk to the border, so it'll be a bit of a squeeze and the time pressure will probably mean walking thDay 644. I met Mauricio Bonetti as I was leaving the small town María Luisa. He rolled up on his bike to talk for a bit. He was a carpenter teacher for years, but now helps raise his grandchildren. "There are lots of children of immigrants here; Germans,Day 641. Amazingly, with a one hundred percent chance of rain, Savannah and I stayed ahead of the storm most of the day. I could see the storm behind us, but it wasn't until I was soundly in my tent that it really caught up. All the cloud cover made for gBeen walking beside lots of this. Cows and their pasture for miles. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 640. Looks as though we're getting a nice long break from the heat. We'll likely be walking through rain for the next few days, but you take what you get. I know Savannah's happy about it. #theworldwalk #travel #argentina #savannahtww #teampixel #giftDay 638. Sorry for the delay! I've been stuck between either marshes or cornfields for the past few days, and finally made it back to civilization. I have just a few rolls of bread and a can of tuna left - I rationed my food almost perfectly. Not much hapThe bonus of waking up at five. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 632. Nothing here but farmland. Yesterday it took Sav and I an hour to find a decent tree to sit under midday. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 630. The temperature dropped from 102° to 93° and rainy today. It isn't the greatest leaving a hotel room for rain, but I'd rather rain than heat right now. Hopefully things will start cooling off now. Spent a good two days in the small city of AñatuyDay 628. What a great two days of back road walking. Each day Sav and I woke at 5 then walked until 11 in order to beat the heat. Since we were walking beside a defunct railroad track we passed some awesome old farmhouses. Two days ago we were invited intDay 626. Going to be looking for a tree like this to hide under during midday. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 624. The other day I spent nearly seven hours at a shop in a little town. After buying some cold water, the family gave me eggs, tea, and a reclining chair so I could nap. Their daughter/granddaughter was super pleasant, almost too pleasant. She was mDay 623. Adjusting to this heat little by little. I was able to wake up at 5:30 today without too much grogginess then get walking by 6. By 11, unless there's cloud cover, it's impossible to walk. Thankfully, I'm headed south-east and the worst days of suDay 622. I got into wifi yesterday and was able to check the weather for the week ahead - it's suppose to be 107° on Sunday. What is this madness?! Over the past two years I've yet to do any night walking, but that may be changing this week. Half the dayDay 621. It was 97° yesterday. Thankfully Savannah and I staggered into town right at noon when the heat was really racheting up. We laid in the shade listening to music blast through the town square until 5. By then it was cloudy and windy so we got moviLandscape photography came easier to me; with landscapes there isn't the need to ask someone if they'd mind stopping for a moment and having their picture taken. But with so much farmland I figure it's as good a time as any to focus on my portraits. PhotoDay 620. It is freaking hot. Savannah and I managed to walk until noon yesterday, but after that we couldn't walk for more than a few minutes until after five. The sprawl of Tucúman was overtaken by farmland pretty quickly. Now it's peaceful, sweaty walkiFour flights and two days later and we've finally arrived in San Miguel de Tucúman. I'm roughly 900 miles (1,500 km) from Montevideo, Uruguay. That should take 40 days or so. Today it's gathering supplies and doing maintenance on the cart. Then tomorrow tSavannah in her summer cut. There was a moment during my break, when I found out Savannah's international paperwork was delayed, that I thought Savannah wouldn't be coming back to Argentina with me. For about an hour I slumped in a chair and didn't speakDay 619. Wandering the plains of Argentina when I was sent this photo by Kaisa Siren. I met Kaisa at seven in the morning back in Reserva Los Flamencos. At nearly 5,000 meters it was 10° farenheit, I had my face covered to keep it from drying out. MeanwhiDay 617. Throwback to when the land wasn't flat and the humidity wasn't stifling. It's gonna be difficult to get a good night sleep in this summer heat. #theworldwalk #travel #argentina #savannahtwwDay 616. Back on the road today after a few days rest. Should be lots of farmland ahead, great for camping and restaurants with steaks. Also, great Eagles game yesterday, first I caught in a while. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 612. The great thing about walking everyday is that despite being exposed to the elements I have a purpose each and every day; walk. I never fall asleep unsure what I'll do with tomorrow. I know I'll learn a little more and grow little more with eachDay 611. One more day to Tucúman where I have a hotel room waiting for me. So ready for a shower and a good sleep. I took one day off after crossing the Andes, but my body hasn't really fully recovered yet. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 610. Purmamarca, the high-elevation town, is filled with pricy hotels and spas. The surrounding area is a UNESCO world heritage site, designated as such for the tremendously colored mountains. Despite this, the town is removed enough from the major poDay 607. This was the awesome road I descended from 14,000 feet to about 6,000 at Purmamarca. Currently I'm on something much flatter, bordered by farms, and swarming with insects. I left my shoes out of my tent last night and found a near-palm-size spideDay 606. Sorry for the delay! I've been walking towards San Miguel de Tucuman and haven't had service. It's rained the past two days and my legs have been tormented by no-see-ums. I thought after such a brutal crossing of the Andes that Argentina would beDay 604. As I made my descent the appearance of cacti was the first change. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 603. This was one of my favorite roads I've ever walked. There was hardly any sound at all, even birds chirping was rare. Felt like I was walking somewhere sacred. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaOn those barren roads there are always cars stripped to the chassis. They make for great shade at high noon. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 602. Made a huge descent the past two days. Mosquitoes are back, humidity is up, but damn is it nice not having to battle the wind to set up my tent. This photo is from nearly a week back, while I was still at 14,000 feet. #theworldwalk #travel #argenDay 601. After crossing into Argentina the road began a gradual descent. I stayed above the treeline for days, hiding in the shade of street signs when I needed to get out of the sun. Vicuñas could be seen grazing in the distance while their domesticated@fitzmaro just reminded me I've been on the road for 600 days. I lost track for a bit out there in the desert. Crazy it's been 600 days, crazier that it's going to be at least 1000 more. Think I'll go get myself an Argentinian steak to celebrate. #theworlWhat I do in Montevideo most days: coffee/Reddit, gym, make lunch, shower, walk to the park with Savannah, study Spanish, watch YouTube videos, eat dinner, play Diablo lll, read a short story, sleep. (Bars, Eagles news and Photoshop tutorials sprinkled inDay 661. Gonna keep these Carnaval photos going a bit longer, they're just too good. The past two days were the first in as long as I can remember that I didn't walk at least 21 miles. The humidity was crippling. Even in the shade I was sweating. Today SaHaving nine days left of South America, a shoulder to walk on, and a boat to Antarctica in three weeks has me feeling like I'm still at Carnaval. #theworldwalk #travel #argentina #carnavalDay 657. Along with Venice and Río de Janeiro, the smallish city of Gualeguaychú has one of the largest carnavales in the world. Clubs parade intricately designed costumes and floats each weekend for fourteen weeks. I was lucky enough to stumble into GualDay 654. Happiness is the only measure. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 651 - A circular rainbow where the sun is burning through the clouds. The humidity has been maddening, I was drenched in sweat by eight this morning. But for the first time in Argentina the road I'm walking has a shoulder! It's a dream. I can actuallyDay 650. Foggy mornings mean humid days. Two days in a row a different stray dog walked most of the day with Sav and I. The first started in the morning and walked with us until noon. Yesterday a dog picked up with us at lunch and walked twelve miles intoDay 659. Looks like I'll be getting one sunny day today between the storms - a good opportunity to dry everything out. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 658. Last night was one of the roughest since being on the road. A truly fearsome thunderstorm rolled through, pounding the tent with heavy rain for hours. Normally when it's raining Savannah can stay dry in the tent's vestibule, but the ground floodeDay 646. Out of peacedul Paraná today and towards the Uruguay border. If the next week goes smoothly I should be getting my passport stamped with one day remaining on Savannah's paperwork. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 643. Sav and I have really found our rhythm. Despite being modestly hungover and not starting until 11 we still managed to walk 21 miles yesterday. If we keep pace we'll be finished walking South America in three weeks. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinDay 642. After taking a midday break, we got under way in a drizzle. Thirty minutes later the drizzle turned into a full on downpour which didn't let up for four hours. I was surrounded by farmland and over those four hours I didn't encounter a single solSan Cristóbal is a great place to spend the day. Walked through town, over the railroad tracks, and found a cafe to write in. #theworldwalk #travel #argentinaDay 639. This is Juan Cejas, or in English, John Eyebrows (too good). We met while I was taking a lunch break and he was out fishing. He didn't catch anything that morning but we had a good conversation nonetheless. "No one goes anywhere. People tell youDay 634. It seems as though we've made it through the worst of the heat. Yesterday was sub-90 and today will be too. We just arrived in the little city of Tostado. I'm in search for a market (ideally a supermarket), but since it's Sunday everything is cloDay 633. Another monster storm is rolling through right now to cool things down. Luckily I found a gas station to post up at. It's strange being in a rainy area again, through all of Perú and Chile I didn't see a single rainy day. #theworldwalk #travel #aDay 631. A monster storm yesterday cooled things off. Today Savannah was able to jump in a roadside lake every few miles. It was a pleasant day of walking. And now we're turning southeast, the temp should be dropping steadily. #theworldwalk #travel #argenDay 629. Although it's absurdly hot here, the province of Santiago del Estero consists of one of my favorite color pallettes. Faded green grass, cacti, and dirt front yards make a beautiful contrast against pastel colored houses. Spending another day outDay 614. Back in southern Mexico there were rivers running off the mountains every few miles. Each night I'd camp next to a river and wash off the sweat of the day. Here in Argentina it took me ten days to wash the sweat off. #theworldwalk #travel #argent
