Chile

Day 589. Paperwork will be ready later today, just have to take a bus to Calama to pick it up. It's been nice hanging out in San Pedro. Cool little town with lots of foreigners to trade stories with. I drained a bottle of wine and some beers last night whDay 588. Well, almost there. The government paperwork for Savannah takes a day to be processed. Tomorrow I'll either be able to pick it up here in San Pedro or I'll have to take a bus back to Calama again to pick it up. Really hoping for the former. For nDay 585. Back on the road today. Savannah and I are skipping about a week walk through the worst of the desert. It's by far the longest portion of walking I've skipped, but the terrain is too harsh for Savannah and I'm not taking the chance of getting stuDay 584. The plan had been to get back on the road this morning, but it occurred to me late last night that since I won't be in a city for at least 2 weeks I should probably get Savannah into the vet for one last checkup. I want to be sure I've done my duDay 579. Savannah isn't quite roadworthy yet. The vet said it wasn't even worth having her blood tested, anemia takes a while to fully recover from. Since our AirBnb ran out we had to find a new one. Not many people accept dogs so I had to pay a bit moreDay 575. Well Mr. Trump, I hope you know what you're doing. #theworldwalk #travel #chileDay 567. Welp, that was a brutal game last night, but such is life as Eagles fan. With the OT and the two hour time difference between Perú and Chile my internal clock is out of wack. So I'm staying in Arica for one more day to ensure a good sleep beforeAt the end of my third day from San Pedro De Atacama I finished in the flats of Los Flamencos at 14,000 feet. There was nothing but sand, the wind barrelled over the distant mountains and across the plains relentlessly. At sundown I tied my tent to a fencWell, those were the most physically challenging ten days of my life. Here's what it looked like on day three: a salt lake at 14,000 feet in La Reserva Los Flamencos between Chile and Argentina. The water actually looks like quicksilver and if the air wasDay 594. Leaving San Pedro I packed 16 liters of water in my cart (4 liters a day), adding roughly 35 pounds of weight. From there I tramped from this plant to the base of the volcano in the distance. The climb was so steep at points I could only manage tDay 593. Well, Savannah and I made it to the other side! Chile complete, into Argentina. The mountain pass of Los Flamencos was the most difficult walking I've ever done. Really, truly brutal. Before I get into that though, one last post from San Pedro deDay 590. You are here, life is fascinating, be thankful. Me and the girl are back on the road today. Life is good. #theworldwalk #travel #chileChile just won't let me get into a rhythm. Turns out I missed a paper to get Savannah into Argentina and we can only get it back in Calama. Hopefully we can catch a ride tomorrow, get the paper, and be back where we left off by the afternoon. The only savDay 587. Sav and I will be passing through our last Chilean town today, San Pedro de Atacama. From there it's up into the massive nature reserve Los Flamencos where there are volcanoes, salt lakes, and, of course, flamingos. I doubt there will be cell towDay 586. I witnessed the most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen last night, it nearly had me in tears. So glad to be outdoors again. #theworldwalk #travel #chileDay 583. Out of Arica and headed south. Back on the road tomorrow morning. #theworldwalk #travel #chileDay 581. I almost always sleep better on my tarp than in a bed. I think Savannah would agree, besides, look at that playground she has. #theworldwalk #travel #chile #savannahtwwDay 578. Headed back to the vet today to get this little one's blood tested. Depending on her levels we'll either be posted up for a while longer or be heading south tomorrow to get on the road again. #theworldwalk #travel #chileDay 574. We're on the up and up here! The smallest of nosebleeds this morning, but strong through the rest of the day. Antibiotics and an eighteen hour sleep seem to have worked wonders. My stress is already draining away. My girl is getting back to normaDay 571. Bad day yesterday. Savannah's nose started bleeding after our midday break. We went straight back in the shade but it only bled worse and worse. I waved down a car which took us to the nearest town. No vet here though. We're taking a four hour taDay 570. In the day the land is so featureless it puts you to sleep, then at night the sky comes alive to keep you awake. #theworldwalk #travel #stars #chileDay 568. Okay, back on the road today. Being posted up for a few days was nice, but after a while I feel lost. The immediate purpose of walking is inherently gratifying. Whenever I walk until I'm tired I've had a good day. #theworldwalk #travel #chileDay 566. This shot is actually from back in Perú. I posted up in an AirBnb today to watch me some SNF. Further exploration of Chile starts tomorrow, but this far I'm loving it here - very clean, no honking cars, and fairly developed. #theworldwalk #travelDay 565. We made it to Chile! We arrived at the border in the afternoon, then I had to go chasing paperwork for Savannah for a few hours, but by 9pm we were across. After that we found a spot of desert and zonked out. Glad to be here! #theworldwalk #trave
