Colombia

Warped mountain pass. If you look real close you can see Savannah-girl. #theworldwalk #travel #colombia #savannahtwwDay 415. 6am in the little town of Puracé. Dawn is always the best walking. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 414. Walking without the cart was liberating, but I can't see myself walking with just a backpack for more than a few days. The cart is less mobile, but I can carry way more and not have the weight on my back. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDespite raining every hour I was there the muted and desaturated landscape of the Páramo had the feeling of a desert. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaSorry for the radio silence the last few days. I was getting stir crazy waiting for the new axle, so took a backpack and crossed the Cordillera Central. The landscape over the mountains was some of the most unique I've ever seen. In fact, the ecosystem, PDay 408. Nothing to do but hang by the river. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaStill trying to decide whether to cross those mountains without the cart...for now I'm gonna sit on my balcony with a cigar and a few beers, maybe do some reading too. #theworldwalk #travel #colombia #savannahtwwDay 406. So looks like it'll be at least another week until new parts get down here, but I think I've figured a way out of this...it would involve crossing the mountains to Popayán in two thirty-three mile days with just my backpack, returning by truck foBeen slacking with my photos lately, it's too easy to bum in my hotel room! Gotta step it up and get back to work, even if I'm not walking. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 405. View from my $13 a night hotel room. Looks like I'll be here through the weekend. Not much going on, La Plata is more of a town than a city. Anxious to get back on the road. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 403. I'm trying to make the most of my days while I'm waiting for the new axles to get here, but I can't help imagining how much further along I'd be if my axle hadn't broken. Anyway, was looking back through my photos and came across this guy from PaDay 403. No luck with the motorcycle...a guy has one without paperwork I could use but not gonna take my chances with that. Looks like it'll be La Plata for the week. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 402. No luck finding a motorcycle yesterday, no one wants to rent to a gringo and I can't afford to buy a bike then resell it. Gonna keep searching though, don't want to be stuck in this little city all week. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 401. I'm doing the same thing right now, but in a twelve dollar hotel room. I couldn't find someone to make a new axle, it's too specialize a part, but praise be to Philly Sign who's sending me two new ones. I'll be posted up a week or so while I waitWell not exactly where I expected to be on day 400. Pushing my cart up the mountains yesterday my axle snapped. I trudged, holding one side of the cart for about a mile, before finding a ride into town, then back to La Plata. I'm heading to a shop now toDay 399. Lots of climbing yesterday, but far more today. I'm in La Plata this morning, abusing some WiFi cause my data still isn't working. This'll be the last decent sized town/city until I'm across the mountains to Popayán. It'll be strenuous, dirt roadDay 398. Now I'm really in the middle of nowhere. Crossing over the mountains towards Popayán and for the next few days I'll be lucky to hit a single town a day. Don't have internet so images will be sparse, but it's gorgeous, breezy highlands. This is MaDay 397. Yesterday a student, Juan, saw me walking out of Neiva then later walking into his town. He stopped to talk and offered to help me find a hotel. Normally I'm on my guard, but Juan seemed earnest. We found a hotel, then he showed me around town, mSuspension bridge in to Neiva. Stayed at hotel in downtown last night so I could grab a new tire this morning. So far the Colombian cities have been cleaner and have had much better infrastructure than in Central America. No Pizza Hut to calm the WesternsDay 396. Shoutout to the family that caught me sneaking onto their property trying to find a place to sleep. Instead of kicking me off they brought me to the highest point, showed me where there was water, then brought me some milk from their farm. PeopleDay 395. Sorry for the delay! I've been in the middle of nowhere and my data stopped working for whatever reason. Finally got to a town and found some WiFi. This shot is from yesterday and essentially walked up to me. It's been flat, cloudy walking. HopefDay 393. Yesterday was much better, the road flattened and I burnt out 25 miles. Today it's a lot of humid nothing, might pass through a town. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaColombia is one of seventeen megadiverse countries. In four days I went from brisk Bogotá, into the jungle, over mountains, and finally onto flat rice paddies between mountain ranges. The flat rice paddies are my favorite. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 392. Not a great day yesterday, my mind and body just weren't up to it, only managed 10 miles. But today's a new day and I'm not giving in easily. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 391. Was almost all downhill yesterday, makes for nice walking, but also means it's getting hotter. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaJust realized I forgot to bring soap... #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 390. It's strange and good to be walking again, felt great to sleep outside, but have a feeling the miles are gonna drag by today. Have about a month to Ecuador, using that as my short-term goal. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaWent for a walk to Catedral Primera de Colombia earlier and got caught in a downpour on the way back. Every time you're outside in Bogota there's about a fifty-fifty chance of it raining. Makes for nice gardens though. #theworldwalk #travel #colombia #bogOtra paisaje urbano. Best buddy @fitzmaro flying in today! He's planning to meeting up with me on every continent, two for two so far. #theworldwalk #travel #colombia #bogotaBeen loving this silver city. #theworldwalk #travel #colombia #bogotaBogota climbing the mountains. #theworldwalk #travel #colombia #bogotaIt was a couple steep miles down to where the treehouse was so we decided to take horses back up. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaView from the treehouse we stayed in the other night. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaMountain Murph. We stayed in a treehouse seventy-five feet in the air last night, we had to climb a ladder along the tree to get up there then repel down in the morning. We had a few beers, cigars, and were the same height as the monkeys. #theworldwalk #tLoving this city, dog-friendly, beautiful architecture, posh people, verdant, and the temperature makes it feel like perpetual autumn. #theworldwalk #travel #colombia #bogotaApologize for not posting the past few days, I've been enjoying resting my brain and body. Bogota is incredible. Couldn't have chose a better spot to take my well earned month off. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaThis was my view leaving Colombia, it was a shear drop off from the road, had me lightheaded at times. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaOne more angle of Las Lajas Sanctuary. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 436. Spent my last night in Colombia at Las Lajas Sanctuary. Built between two cliffs and over a river the sanctuary is like something out of a movie. After six it's lit by color-shifting lights to give it an ethereal air. Now, this morning, it's justI'd say about ninety percent of the houses I pass are single room and tin roofed. So if you have more than one room in your house, consider yourself very lucky. If you have hot water or ice consider yourself lucky too. Actually, no matter what you have coDay 435. Last full day in Colombia. It's been great, beautiful sights and friendly people, but about time to move on. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaYesterday, I came to the last mountain before Pasto. I turned left and followed the road until coming to a tunnel. A huge sign above the tunnel announced no bicycles or pedestrians were allowed. The other road to Pasto was another two hours over the mountDay 434. Yesterday was one of the toughest days since Guatemala. I had maybe thirty total minutes of flat or downhill walking. At times I wanted to scream, 'Just give me a break!' Yet somehow I managed over twenty seven miles to make it to Pasto. #theworlWe're best buds. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 433. Nearly at Pasto already, been burning out these miles. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 342. Into the hot lowlands. No coffee, no crops, not even many shops, just dry river beds and mountains in the distance. Should be climbing those mountains today and escaping the heat. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 431. Oh man, I am freaking sore. Beautiful sights, but this isn't gonna be an easy one. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 429. Back at it! Left the white city (Popayán) this morning. Feels incredible to be free of walls and out in the open air again. The only worry I have is the millimeter of metal keeping my axle from splitting in two, it only needs to last 15 days to QDay 427. There's still an off chance that the parts are in Bogotá, gonna give it a few more hours, otherwise it's back to La Plata and taking my chances on my welded axle... #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 426. And the plot thickens. Got to Bogotá yesterday only to be told customs rejected the axle because I didn't pay the $0.66 tax in time. Now the parts are being sent back to the States. This has become such an unexpected hassle. Can't complain too muDay 425. Change of plans. Ten hour bus ride straight to Bogotá to sort this out once in for all. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaThe quest for my axle continues. Turns out it made it to Bogotá but is being held there because of a $0.66 import tax. I can only pay the tax at one bank, and can't pay online. La Plata doesn't have the bank I need so I have to take a bus to Popayán. In PDay 424. Hoping today is the day this axle gets in. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaI was told there'd be a festival today but instead all the shops are closed and the park is empty. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 423. Spent a long overdue morning exploring La Plata. About a week ago I found a great breakfast spot and have been eating there every morning. Today I went to the market though and had breakfast there. (Reposted for better quality) #theworldwalk #traDay 422. Welp, still in La Plata. The shipping store is closed until Tuesday for a festival. Trying to make the best of this prolonged wait, lots of reading and Spanish practice. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 421. Loved walking through the clouds in Puracé. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 420. Still no axles. It's been three weeks here in La Plata, I'd like to think I've been productive, but miss seeing my dot moving on maps. Fingers crossed the new parts arrive today. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 419. Axle should be arriving today! Might actually be back on the road tomorrow! #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 418. Uploaded some of my favorite photos to be available as prints. If you wanna help a brotha out and get something in return, here's the link: http://ift.tt/1WSWh71. #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 417. So looks like the new parts will be arriving Thursday and I'll be back on the road soon! #theworldwalk #travel #colombiaDay 416. Wouldn't mind waking up and having coffee on that back porch. #theworldwalk #travel #colombia
