Ecuador

Day 469. Effortless border crossing yesterday. I got a 180 visa and they didn't even acknowledge Savannah. Since the border the land has been extremely barren, great for finding secret camping spot, but means I need to stayed well stocked with water. #theI've walked by this house every morning since getting into Macará. I can't help but sit at a bench across the street and stare. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 466. Rice paddies leading into the oasis that is Macará. Oh, and the Reddit AMA is live! Ask me anything! #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorRound two! Tomorrow starting at 11am EST on Reddit, ask me anything! I've been on quite the adventure since my last AMA in Texas. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 465. View in the morning yesterday. Nearly at Macará, just a few miles left. Gonna post up there for a day to resupply and rest. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorAt the peak yesterday, beginning my descent. The land has since dried out. There's lots of wind, no clouds and lots of thorns. Eighteen miles to the border. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 464. We made it, my god we made it. Relief for my legs. It should be all downhill from the border and since it's Sunday I'll have the road to myself. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorMaking this final climb over the Andes and it's freaking terrible...so steep... #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 462. My life eight hours a day, seven days a week. Sorry for not posting yesterday, been working my way through the Andes and haven't had service. Just a few days from the border now. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorFree of the banana farms! Now it's one more climb into the Andes before heading down into the Sechura desert of Perú. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 460. Bananas, river, bananas, river, bananas, river. At least I know where my bananas come from now. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 459. Interview this morning so get to rest the legs a bit! Then once I get back on the road I have less than a week to Perú. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorIn my midday delirium I really, really wanted to sleep under that tree. Instead I walked another nine miles, slept in the woods, and woke with three ticks on me. Ah, such is the life of a man walking around the world. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 458. I tried to set my tent in one of these cocoa fields but was swarmed by mosquitoes immediately. So instead of fending off the little beasts until I crawled into my tent I walked another six miles to find a corn field where the mosquitoes weren't sSnapped this guy a few days back as I was making my descent towards the coast. I've loved Ecuador, the people have been incredible, however it's been a difficult country for food. There aren't a great deal of shops and hardly any supermarkets. Usually I'lDay 456. He was swinging his sisters from one side to the other. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorSavannah and I in our abandoned house the other night. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 456. We were walking beside banana farms almost all day yesterday, the only break in them was a small city and this river. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorSavannah only drinks from the purest mountain springs. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 455. The heat is on. The mountains are falling behind me and the coast is getting nearer. Passed through the hectic city of Bucay yesterday afternoon then slept in an abandoned house last night. It's always a lot easier to sleep in a weird spot knowinI've decided my favorite landscape is the Páramo, Andean plains above the treeline. I think I've passed through my last one for this walk. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 454. Walked downhill all day yesterday and pretty sure I'll do the same today. It's easier walking, but I miss the cool air of the mountains. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorAll eyes on Savannah. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 453. Taking a short cut off the Pan-American and over the Andes. I slept last night above the treeline in the Páramo - it was freezing, coldest night I've had by far. Descending now though so it's warmer. Also, how great is this photo?! She's walkingOvergrowth. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 452. What you can't see is behind those clouds is a snow capped volcano. I didn't even realize I was walking beside it until I got to the bottom, looked back, and saw the clouds had cleared. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorAnyone know what this is? #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 451. When I first started I was walking about fifteen miles a day and waking up with my legs cramping. Now I walk twenty four miles a day and don't feel a thing. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuador"Go ahead, take a picture of an old man and his plate of corn." #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 450. I can't remember the last time I saw train tracks. They're everywhere in the U.S., but became rare once I was south of the border. It was oddly comforting walking beside them. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorSavannah girl the other night curling for warmth. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 449. These high altitude mornings are making it real tough to leave my sleeping bag. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorHeaded into the woods to find our campground for the night. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 448. It rained nearly all day yesterday except the fifteen minutes it took to set up camp. Got pretty lucky there. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorFirst day back and it's pouring rain. Right now I'd take the brutal mountains of Colombia for some sun. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 447. Back on the road today and roughly twenty more days until Perú. The week off has me very well rested so it's time to start burning out these miles again. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorWhere I read. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 446. New parts were released from customs yesterday and should be in Quito today or tomorrow. Though after nearly two months of waiting I'll believe it when I have my new axle in hand. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorView of Quito from the backyard. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 445 - the walkway between steeples in Basilica de Voto Nacional. Quito is a very confusing city to me, I think it would takes years to come close to understanding it. The city is high altitude, but not on a flat like I'd expect, instead it's spread ovOur stay in Quito has been made infinitely better with the help of new friends. Without them Savannah and I'd be holed up in a hotel on the city's outskirts. The generosity of people forever astounds me. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 444. Should be hearing back from customs today about how much in taxes I owe for the axle. Ecuador has a super high import tax, making a jar of peanut butter around $10 and pushing up the price of cars sixty to seventy percent. #theworldwalk #travel #Day 443. Went churching today and managed this illegal photo before being told it was illegal. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 442. It's said when La Iglesia La Basilica is finished the world will come to an end. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorI'm a fool a forgot to charge my camera before heading into the city. Anyway, here's the absurdly beautiful Iglesia La Basilica. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 441. The quest for my axle continues. The axle made it to DHL in Quito but is being held for an import tax. I need to pay customs to release the package, but customs is closed for the weekend. That means I have to wait until Monday. Thankfully though,Cool and breezy on the road to Quito. I fear I'm being spoiled before the deserts of Perú. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 441. Absolutely loving Ecuador and it's perfect roads. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorNearly to Quito and my new axle! Only half a day more. Huge thanks as always to Philly Sign for having my back and getting the new axle to me. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 440. Ended my day in a pretty densely populated area so pulled behind a school to set up. Around back was an open room of showers so laid out my tarp in there. Night came and there wasn't any problem until the school's cleaning lady followed SavannahReally enjoying Ecuador so far, primarily because it actually feels safe. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 439. Was so exhausted yesterday I passed out at 8:30. I started the gradual climb to Quito yesterday and it'll be uphill for another three days. Really enjoying Ecuador so far, my first city, Ibarra, is clean, calm, and has some decent sidewalks. #theOkay, so those twenty-eight miles I did yesterday weren't exactly with ease, definitely paying today. Still though, Ecuador has great, wide roads which make walking much easier. Should be in Quito in three days. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 438. Feeling so good back on the road. 28 miles yesterday with ease. #theworldwalk #travel #ecuadorDay 437. Getting into Ecuador was a breeze, probably the easiest border crossing yet. I'm at about 9000ft elevation right now. It's cool, there are pastures everywhere, and the road is mostly flat. So far nothing but good things. #theworldwalk #travel #ec
