Guatemala

Day 265. Last shot from Lake Atitlan I swear - just love this photo. And today, I'm finally feeling back up to the challenge, took some antibiotics last night and they seemed to have wiped out whatever was going on in my stomach. Looking forward to a fullDay 263. Slept about twelve hours last night and only managed five miles today before getting a hotel room to pass out in. Think I'm feeling better but we'll see tomorrow. Glad to have Savannah girl to hang out with. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 258. Happy New Year! How will you be improving yourself this year? I'll be staying in San Marcos La Laguna a bit longer working on the goal within the goal; to learn Spanish. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaThe warm, deep water of Lake Atitlan demands finding new things to jump off. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 250. That sounds so substantial, two hundred fifty, has a nice heft to it. Happy holidays from me and my girl. I'm one of the most fortunate people in the world; I'm not only living my dream, I have a phenomenal family behind me and thousands of suppoDay 249. To withdraw money I had to take a boat to San Pedro, a slightly larger city across the lake. I didn't realize public boats stopped running at five, so was forced to barter with a boat owner on prices back to San Marcos. Snapped this shot while weDay 248. This is the greatest place for morning walks. There are huge hills to get the heart pumping and views to keep you motivated. The only sounds are birds flicking overhead and the occasional puttering tuk-tuk. And the people, even in the morning, arDay 248. Streets of San Marcos La Laguna. Was planning on leaving after a day or two, but found a place to get one on one Spanish lessons so signed up for a week of six hours a day. Trying to take my Spanish to the next level. It'll be Christmas on the laDay 245. Down in the city now, which means there's nowhere to go but up. Two or three days from posting up at Lake Atitlan. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaKids hanging out on the rooftop watching the alien gringo pushing his baby carriage. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 267. It's about time I posted a political painting. These signs are all over rocks and walls down here. Also, made it 23 miles yesterday and should do 22 today after crossing into El Salvador. Two days in and I've kept pace to Costa Rica. #theworldwalDay 266. So I have two friends coming to Costa Rica on February sixth. I'm about 1000 kilometers away and have twenty-nine days before they arrive. That means if I want to spend the week with them I'll have to average 35 kilometers a day (or 21 miles). I'Day 264. After sleeping about half of yesterday I'm feeling much better today. Savannah and I are gonna be burning out some miles. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 262. Sorry for the delay, had a pretty rough one. My body was tight and sore. I had a headache all day from trying to kick caffeine. And think I brought a little sickness with me from Lake Atitlan. Was only able to get down a few pineapple slices allGoodbye Lake Atitlan, you've been swell. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 261. Last morning here and it's a beautiful one. In the distance Volcán de Fuego's plume is catching the morning light. I'll miss this place, especially in the morning, but it's time to move on. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 260. This shot is actually from the day before I got to Lake Atitlan, just never had the chance to post it. The urge to get walking is growing strong, gonna have to leave soon to satisfy it. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 259. Clothes for sale and drains in the ground. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 257. Serious, hand-carved kayaks right there. For me, another day of Spanish and weighing the benefits of staying for a few more lessons versus starting my trek to Panama. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaGet on the boat first and you'll be pushed to the back, stand around on the dock until they push off and you get seats on the bow. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 256. Spanish all day, cramming as much in my head while I have the opportunity. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 255. Every morning it's like this; the sunlight misting the volcanos with yellow light and the streets permitting uncluttered vistas by taking steep drops down the mountain. Thinking once I've made some money I'll build myself a writing retreat with tDay 254. I somehow turned this into a dive. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 253. Savannah is a very popular girl down here, she's made me more than a few friends. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 252. Morning walks and Spanish lessons have been my life this past week and I've loved every second of it. Staying another week for more, trying to break my Spanish plateau. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 251. Merry Christmas! Now get off the screen and spend your day with family and friends! #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 247. View of San Marcos as I was walking towards it yesterday. Staying at a hostel with lots of English speakers. First time I've been with Americans in over two months. It's great but also doesn't feel as Guatemalan. Still, nice to have conversationsLake Atitlan, well worth the walk. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 246. Actually walked twenty-five miles yesterday. The road was flat for most of the day then a steady incline that put me way in the mountains with incredible views of the volcanos I'm headed towards. It's freezing up here, everyone is bundled head toDay 244. Lots of towns nestled in the jungle. Think I'm through the most difficult ascent, hoping for a somewhat easier day today and actually being capable of doing more than twelve miles. #theworldwalk #travel #guatemalaDay 243. Million dollar view from the back porch of some friendly Guatemalans who took me in for the night. So far this country has been unbelievably physically taxing but also the most welcoming. Everyone strikes up a conversation. Also, have internet fo
