Perú

Day 564. Just a day's walk from the Perú/Chile border. South Perú has been barren, but northern Chile will be doubly so. Gonna have to be ready for long days in the desert. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 563. Have been passing lots of port towns. The fisherman are an extremely friendly lot, they seem to know what the important things are. #theworldwalk #travel #peruSleeping beside the ocean tonight. Just a few days from the Chilean border! #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 562. Baby girl. #theworldwalk #travel #peruOne of the coolest parts about walking along a desert-lined coast is that over the ocean the clouds are blue but over the desert the clouds are orange. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 561. Other than making it down to the pier for sunset I laid in bed just about all day yesterday. You're allowed to do that after walking 150 miles in six days. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 560. Came into Ilo yesterday absolutely toast from long, mountainous days. Savannah and I bounced between ten hotels before finding one that would accept her. After getting a room I didn't leave the bed expect to take Savannah for a walk and to get diDay 559. Pretty much sums up my walk from Lima. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 558. I always see these places and think "I could live there." Wonder where I'll actually end up. #theworldwalk #travel #peruI never had much desire to scale mountains. I've only ever wanted a large field to walk through. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 557. It's been overcast for four days straight now. I was expecting it to get increasingly hotter as I moved south, but I was actually cold at points yesterday. #theworldwalk #travel #peruWater in the valley. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 555. Just had two days of essentially perfect walking. Overcast, spanking new road, and almost no cars. Could go for some ceviche, but that'll have to wait until I get into a town. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 554. Back on the road. Camana was a beautiful, peaceful city. It's surrounded by rice paddies and borders the ocean. Don't know how the salty ocean wind hadn't turned the land fallow. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 553. There have been loads of these secluded beaches during my walk down Perú. Each time I passed one I imagined the swarm of houses that would be surrounding the beach in the US. #theworldwalk #travel #peruA ways back in the olive fields. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 552. Just making it into town today to catch the Birds! Love having these Sundays off. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 551. This is Savannah. She was plucked off a highway in Austin then adopted last August. She has paws like stones and the legs of a bodybuilder. She loves people, is scared as hell of the ocean, and can be a pretty good guard dog. I'm really glad to hDay 550. Walking beside walls of sand and enjoying the ocean breeze. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 549. The other night I was laid out for the evening on my tarp in dunes similar to these. Savannah barked, which I thought strange cause there was no signs of life. I stood and saw three human silhouettes on a near crest. One disappeared, the others mI used to walk at least twenty-four miles everyday. And at the end of everyday I was exhausted and aching. Since Lima I've realized I don't need to hurry through my days. I now walk a minimum of twenty-one miles a day and try to take each Sunday off. My bDay 548. This is some absurdly beautiful walking. The Pan-American runs just a stone's throw from the ocean for nearly the entire south of Perú. Whenever I want to cool of I just jump in the water for a minute. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 547. Really glad to be back along the ocean. Much better views. #theworldwalk #travel #peruThe riverbed divide between olive farms and the desert. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 546. I came to this valley filled with olive farms yesterday. I was walking through so much dry land the last thing I was expecting was this burst of green. (Yauca District, Perú) #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 545. Long roads and lots of sand. Soon I'll be walking beside the ocean. Fingers crossed it stays relatively cool. Won't be able to watch the game, but Go Birds! #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 543. Surprised I have service to post this, don't know where it's coming from, I'm in the middle of the desert. Also, it's way cooler than I was expecting, a steady breeze has been coming off the Pacific. I'm enjoying this barren stretch very much. #tDay 542. Farmers here generally break between 12-3 because of the heat. Even towards 11 the heat can become unbearable. I met this woman in a little valley, since then it's been all sand. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 541. Just behind Nazca the road climbs to high plains. Up there it's cold, men where wool caps and the alpaca have thick fur. I'm heading in the opposite direction, towards the coast and again into the desert. It's unlikely I'll have much service forDay 540. The moon like landscape outside Nazca. Happy to be taking the day off today. I bought a kilo of strawberries for a dollar this morning and ate them all for breakfast. Yum. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 539. Been walking in a whole lot of nowhere lately. No service, no restaurants, just lots of time to turn over my thoughts. The sun is impossibly hard and wind is rare. Into Nazca today then taking the day off tomorrow. Life is good. #theworldwalk #trDay 538. Desert all day yesterday. At the end I found a peaceful hut to sleep in though. People have been super friendly, two people stopped to give me water, another stopped and gave me a few bucks. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 537. This isn't a real house. No one is living here. Someone fenced off the land and built the house to claim the land. Lots of these here. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 537. It's odd, its only about 70 degrees, but when the sun is out it feels like 95. Definitely the strongest sun I've been under, stronger even than Texas and Mexico. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 536. Ankle is feeling pretty good, definitely not 100% but not getting any worse. Five days to Nazca, after that things get really dry until Chile. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 535. Don't want to pay to have a fence installed? Pile up thorn bushes around your vineyard! #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 534. Spent a great four days in Chincha Alta to watch Wentz and heal the ankle. Now it's time to get moving, I should probably stay one more day so my ankle is 100% but I can't sit around any longer. Back into the great wide world today. #theworldwalkDay 533. Ankle still isn't 100% and I don't want to exacerbate it by walking on it for 7-8 hours. So giving myself another day of rest. Snapped this shot a few weeks back in the Andes for @oysterhotels, this planet as some remarks sights. #theworldwalk #tDay 531. Found myself a cheap hotel to post up and watch The Birds! Walking is nice, but watching Wentz is better. #theworldwalk #travel #peruWhere in God's name is this road going? #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 529. My ankle is feeling a bit better after a good sleep. Think in another day or two I'll be tiptop. #theworldwalk #travel #peru #savannahtwwYeesh, today was rough. My left ankle has swollen lump the size of a golf ball. There's be worse, and I'll push through, just gonna be limping for a day or so. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 528. Yesterday was a good day. Made it out of the industrialized desert south of Lima and into the beginnings of agriculture. Legs are a bit sore today, but not as bad as I was expecting. #theworldwalk #travel #peruAs I make my way towards Chile I'll be bouncing off the coast and into the desert. Should be able to spend quite a few nights beside the ocean. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 526. A shot of the jungle as I return to the desert. Nervous/excited to start making my way down the coast of Perú to Chile. Today the adventure continues. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 525. After a month in Lima, Sav and I are shoving off tomorrow. Returning to the desert, it'll be roughly a month walk to Chile. Excited to see what's ahead. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 524. Grabbed this shot of the Andes on my return flight from the jungle. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 523. Savannah at camp. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 522. The meloka, where the ayahuasca ceremonies take place. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 521. These are glowing leaves and they are real. All around the Noya Rao tree the ground is littered with them. It feels like something out of Avatar. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 520. The Noya Rao tree was long thought extinct, but one was found a few years ago. It's a sacred tree to the Shipibo people and is referred to as The Tree of Light. Why? Well because at night it's dropped leaves glow blue. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 519. This is my buddy Keyo. He's from South Africa, we met in Guatemala, and reunited in Perú. A very wise dude with 16 years of dreads. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay ??? - Out of the jungle, out of ayahuasca, still processing the experience and will be writing about it shortly. This is the Meloka and how it feels to be in it while the ceremonies take place. For a semblance of reality I've passed on my best photosDay 518. In the outpost city of Iquitos. The only way in is by boat or plane. Just a few years ago there weren't any cars at all, even today there's only a handful. Shortly, I'll be taking a bus away from the city to the camp. #theworldwalk #travel #peruAbout to take off! Adventure in the jungle! #theworldwalk #travel #peru #savannahtwwDay 517. Well guys, gonna be off the grid for a week. Met a great guy, @nubi.vagant, way back in Guatemala who's been training to be an ayahuasca shaman in the Peruvian jungles. Ayahausca is a brew of two plants used as a spiritual medicine by indigenousDay 516. Possibly my new favorite artist, absolutely my favorite Peruvian artist - Marcelo Wong. I must find a way to send one of these home. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 515. Met this sheppard dog amid the alpacas. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 514. Been trying to upload the 360 video I have of Machu Picchu but the file is so massive I haven't found any internet up to the task yet. Hopefully I can share it with you guys by the weekend. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 513. Many beautiful sunsets in Perú. For anyone planning on visiting Machu Picchu I recommend driving from Lima to Cusco, it's a long drive but the landscapes are spectacular. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 512. Tying up some loose ends in Lima before starting my way down to Chile. It's going to be all desert for the next few months so want to ready. #theworldwalk #travel #peruI have a twenty-five minute 360° video I took while walking through the ruins. Trying to find a decent 360 video editor to clean up the video before posting it. Hopefully I'll have it online by tomorrow. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 511. View from the trail to the Sun Gate. #theworldwalk #travel #peruMountains off to the side of Machu Picchu. Imagine falling asleep with this view every night. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 510. Machu Picchu. It took two attempts for @julianpozzi and I to get there. We followed bad advice Wednesday, driving to the park and arriving too late to get in. Thursday though we were on the first train out of Cusco and walking through the park byDay 509. Took the train to Machu Picchu yesterday, but haven't had a chance to go over my photos yet. The place is mind boggling, a civilization just below the clouds and in the middle of the jungle. Also, photos creds to @jpozzi for snapping this shot ofDay 508. Went for a drive through the Andes yesterday. Today we're headed to Machu Picchu. #theworldwalk #travel #peruMarkets, where the deals are. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 507. One of the best views of Cusco is right outside our hostel. Gorgeous old city. #theworldwalk #travel #peruThe wild alpaca, vincuña, was all over alpine plains. We tried to approached but they're incredibly skittish. It wasn't until a straggler darted across the street that we got a good look. #theworldwalk #travel #peruOut of the desert and into Alpaca land. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 505. There's more to Nazca than just the Nazca lines, there are aqueducts too! But that's pretty much it. #theworldwalk #travel #peruWas climbing dunes yesterday, climbing mountains today. Nine hour drive to Cusco tomorrow. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 504. Awesome day yesterday, we hit a national park, an oasis, and arrived in Nazca. Now it's time for the Nazca lines. #theworldwalk #travel #peruCeviche by the sea today, roasted corn too. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 503. Since adopting Savannah a year ago we haven't been apart for more than a few hours. Today though my friend and I are starting a weeklong road trip to Machu Picchu and Savannah will be staying behind. She'll be well taken care of at my friend's paDay 503 - Military shoeshine. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 502. I enjoy cities as pitstops but I don't think I could ever live in one, I need open space to wander. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 501. Finally made it to Lima's historic district. Spent a few hours between churches, cafés, and museums. Nice way to spend the morning. #theworldwalk #travel #peruI took this a week back in the middle of the desert. There was an empty concrete house on a hill and this was my view from the doorway. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 500...day 500...New Jersey to Lima. I wonder where I'll be in another 500 days. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 499. When you see lots of these little guard stands you know you're in a nice area. Communities hire guards as a supplement to the police. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 498. In Lima, with fraternity brother @arturodtca, eating ceviche. I'm a happy man. #theworldwalk #travel #peruEnter Lima. The eight million man sprawl begins. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 497. I've been able to find an abandoned or unfinished house nearly every night for the past week. Love having protection from the wind and rain without setting up my tent, just throw out my tarp at night and pick it up in the morning. #theworldwalk #Day 496. Still desert, but a little more development. Rain last night, but an abandoned house kept Sav and I dry. Two days to Lima. #theworldwalk #travel #peruRain caught me sleeping on my tarp last night. It was the first time I've had rain in maybe two months. Propped up my tent as quickly as possible. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 495. Getting so close to Lima and some time off. I love being on the road, but man could I go for a hot shower. #theworldwalk #travel #peruOther than kids wandering about playing PokemonGo, I've had a lane to myself all day today. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 494. Think I'm through the worst of the desert until Lima. There should only be half day stretches now. #theworldwalk #travel #peruAnd then, suddenly, it was blue. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 493. Found myself a good spot last night and fell asleep super early listening to the ocean. #theworldwalk #travel #peruAfter climbing all these hills I've noticed something, the towns are always in the valleys. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 492. With nothing but desert, Savannah and I have been churning out these miles. #theworldwalk #travel #peruI took the coast because I thought it'd be flat, but I've been climbing hills all day. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 491. View from tarp the other night. In a long stretch of desert, but it's been cloudy and windy so far. Hoping that holds. About a week to Lima. #theworldwalk #travel #peruFarming amid the sand. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 490. When there's a photo across the street I pull the cart to the side of the road and tie Savannah to it. Savannah waits dutifully. Yesterday it was windy so she watched like this. #theworldwalk #travel #peru #savannahtwwThis was my favorite guy in the market. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 489. Back on the road today! 9-10 days to Lima. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 488. This shot is actually from way back at the Perú/Ecuador border. The first four days in Perú were so free of development I worried even finding water would be a problem. However, as I've made my way south the population and development has increasDay 487. My friend's family has five dogs. Plenty of friends for Savannah. #theworldwalk #travel #peruOn my way to Chimbote I had this lane to myself for about three days. It wasn't until a cop stopped me to see what I was doing though that I turned around and saw the incredible sunset behind me. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 486. The massive, brand new Catedral de Nuevo Chimbote. #theworldwalk #travel #peruInto the market. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 485. Hanging out in Chimbote for the week. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 484. I think I'll find myself a good spot to sit and finish this new Harry Potter. #theworldwalk #travel #peruThe harvest. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 482. Living the good life. My fraternity brother, @arturotca, picked me up outside Chimbote so we could spend a few days at his country home. Nothing like having good friends abroad. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 481. Walked into the Valle de Dios (Valley of God) yesterday. The words were painted everywhere, brick houses climbed up the mountains, and amid the desert was a swath of green. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDesert, stony mountains, and some towns here and there. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 480 - The Freedom Monument at the center of Trujillo. Something I was thinking while laid out on the tarp the other night: Man believes he can ascend from his current state when he cannot. There is no higher state. To be happy he must realize this, tMake your life an adventure. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 479. Whenever I pass a strange or unique house I like to think of someone opening its door after finishing a long journey and having that relief of finally being home. #theworldwalk #travel #peruWalked through an hour of brutal wind and pelting sand. Was especially fun when a semi flew by. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 479. Savannah and I ended our day in a long stretch of desert. We have an unfinished lane to ourselves and loads of wind to keep cool. #theworldwalk #travel #peruWalking beside the Andes. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 478. The land is getting greener and the towns more developed. Most importantly for me is spigots are more common so finding water is easier. #theworldwalk #travel #peruWe slept beside thorn bushes last night. Sav dug a hole while I got a puncture in my sleeping pad. #theworldwalk #travel #peru #savannahtwwDay 477. Sundays are always the best days for walking. Less traffic. Today it's cloudy too, so should really turn out some miles. #theworldwalk #travel #peruI'm in love with this landscape. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 476. Breaking out of the city early today. It was nice bumming around, but I'm ready to be sleeping under the stars again. #theworldwalk #travel #peruOkay, I didn't leave this morning. The lure of exploring the city for one more day was too much. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 475. We're well rested and ready to go, back on the road today. Roughly three more weeks of walking to Lima. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 474. All along the Peruvian coast is desert, so I'm not finished with it, but I made it through the single longest stretch. I'm rewarding myself with the day off. Savannah and I might go for a walk around the block, but probably we'll just lay in ourDay 473. They're not her favorite thing to wear, but when the wind picks up and the sand starts flying the doggles are going on. #theworldwalk #travel #peruSunset over the Pan-American. Just a day from civilization now... #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 472. Nothing to do but turn out these miles. One more night in the desert then should reach a town some time tomorrow. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 472. View from the tent last night. Amazingly I still have some service out here. The road is long and flat and featureless, yet somehow not too hot. Makes for great podcast walking. #theworldwalk #travel #peruWell, headed into 200km of desert. There'll be brush for about 30km then no towns for 170km. I've loaded up on water and food. I'm going to try to walk 50km a day to hustle through, the land is dry, but it's not actually that hot so it should be doable. RDay 471. It's amazing how much of a difference governments make. Each country is so drastically different. I didn't see a single tuktuk in Ecuador, now they're everywhere. #theworldwalk #travel #peruGo to the town well with your donkeys. Wait in line with the others. Walk home. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 470. Savannah in her belly shirt. The people here have been super friendly so far, just about everyone waves as they pass. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 530. I love having this girl around. If you hadn't noticed, she has her summer haircut. #theworldwalk #travel #peru #savannahtwwDay 527. First day back felt good. We only walked about 15 miles so it was a half day. Legs are sore, all this walking again is gonna take some getting used to. Had a great night sleep beside the ocean though. #theworldwalk #travel #peruDay 483. We spent an hour harvesting yesterday - avocados, limes, walnuts, bananas, and these bad boys, papaya. #theworldwalk #travel #peruWater for filtering. #theworldwalk #travel #peru
